Horse barrel racing has become very popular in the last decade. The NBHA (National Barrel Horse Association) was established in 1992 and has 23,000 members from across the USA and some European countries. Competitions are held regularly with various levels of entry, so whether you're a beginner or experienced, young or old, you can compete in horse barrel racing. |

Horse Barrel Racing As shown in the picture to the left, barrel racing has a distinct pattern to it. Barrel racing requires the minimum of equipment, a saddle, a bridle and a helmet if you are a beginner. Once you have the equipment, all you need is the horse. Most competitors in horse barrel racing like to use quarter horses, as they are known for their good temperament, speed and agility. Other horses such as Paints, Appaloosas and Pintos are also popular horses. It is advised that thoroughbred horses are not used for these races, as due to their high-strung nature they cannot make turns with accurate and controlled precision. You can barrel race at any age, and if you want to compete, there are shows in various locations for different ages.
