Boxing Day horse racing has become a famous tradition in Britain. Boxing Day is celebrated in Britain, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. It is supposed to have originated from the fact that the 26th December is St Stephen's Day, and St Stephen was the patron saint of horses. Therefore, Boxing Day became associated with horse racing and hunting.

The most famous of races held on Boxing Day is the King George VI chase. This event is held at Kempton Park Racecourse in London, England.

Kempton Park was originally opened as a racecourse in 1878, by S. H. Hyde. During 1939-1946, Kempton became a prisoner-of-war camp. When it was re-opened in 1947, it was decided that The King George VI Chase, which was normally held in February, would be moved to Boxing Day.

Kempton Park also stages National Hunt racing and flat racing. The National Hunt season is from October to February. Flat racing season is between March and September.
