Thoroughbred
Horse Racing The three original
thoroughbreds that were imported were the Byerly Turk, the Darley Arabian
and the Godolphin Arabian, all named after their owners, respectively. These
horses were bred with native horses to produce long, sleek horses which
could carry weight over a long distance.
Thoroughbreds feature mainly in racing, but are also
used for hunting, dressage, ranch work, pleasure riding and three day
events. They range from 14 to 17 hands in height, and come in a variety of
colours, including bay, chestnut and brown, grey, black and roan.
Although thoroughbreds tend to be born in Spring, their official birthday
is always January 1st. They are trained as soon as they are a year-old
(yearling) and are taught to accept a saddle, bridle and rider.
The Jockey Club, keep a record of thoroughbred breeding, this
is known as the Stud Book.
There are many thoroughbred horse races held in America, tracks include
Aqueduct, Belmont, Calder, Churchill Downs, Gulfstream Park, Hialeah,
Hollywood Park, Keeneland, Monmouth Park, Meadowlands, Philadelphia and
Santa Anita. The most famous of races is the Triple Crown, which
incorporates the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont
Stakes.
